To coincide with my Father’s Day sale, I wanted to put together a list of my top 10 things I’ve learned about being a dad. Of course there are countless fun, loving, happy things that happen as a parent. But sometimes it’s these “other” occurrences that stick in our minds.

1. I never knew you could cut a sandwich the wrong way. You most definitely can.
2. Vans are actually super cool. And I’m not just saying that because we had no other choice but to buy one. I’ve hauled so much stuff in that thing already. Almost always with 90’s hip-hop playing. Windows down.

3. By far the scariest thing about being a dad is clipping your child’s finger nails.
4. It’s impossible to know whether it’s a blue cup or an orange cup day. Kids expect us to know these things right away in the morning. Generally before 6am. And yeah, don’t you dare grab that red cup.

5. I finally learned how to memorize things. Didn’t know I could until my son was wailing in the car and out of nowhere I rattled off at least 8 kids books. Front to back. Character voices included. If only I had this memorization thing down in college....

6. Cake after dinner is NOT considered a treat. The required treat will be administered upon completion of said cake. This is non-negotiable.

7. The mere breaking of a granola bar in half will send a day catapulting in a completely different direction. Every. Damn. Time. And don’t get me started on the wrapper.

8. Children’s thirst glands immediately flip into overdrive as soon as you say “goodnight”. Not sure if thirst glands are a real thing, but demanding that 3rd sip of water before bed sure is.

9. Never eat the last one of anything. As soon as you gobble down that last cookie, muffin, hot dog or whatever, they NEED it. I’m getting better at this, but am still a little traumatized from the Gummy Burger incident of 2017. .
10. A rough hour or two or seven can all be washed away with a big hug or an “I love you, dad”. Further proof our children have the strongest hold on our hearts.

So there you have it. Just a Hopefully dads (and moms) can share a laugh and relate to some of these incidents. 😄
